Nathalie Grenzhaeuser's photographs present a world related to ours and yet fantastic. Deserts, abandoned industrial landscapes, forsaken city and landscapes are recurring subjects, in which she probes the relationship between humans and nature. The staged barrenness and apparent "emptiness" provide the necessary space for a dialogue between association and memory.
Grenzhaeuser's photographs are not documentations. They are created in a complicated process: beginning with various photographic sketches, single moments and parts of a landscape are digitally woven together and sometimes freely "invented". Many small steps gradually transform the picture of the "original place". The photos' textures remind the viewer of film or stage sets, and they are often symbolically charged through their history.
Grenzhaeuser's new series "The Construction of the Still World" thematizes the arctic landscape. The individual photographs are called Kap Amsterdam, Svalsat, Zuckerhut, Hotellneset, Winkelstation, Treibgut and Schmelze. They were created in a two-month stay on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The work references the history of coal mining, the changes in the arctic landscape and its cultural-historical and emotional meaning.
