OSRAM's business units

Opto Semiconductors (OS)

A spectrum of infinite possibilities

Opto Semiconductors (OS)

The OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (OS) business unit has been in a strong global No. 2 position in the LED component market for many years. Especially in the field of specialty applications such as infrared components for smartphones and autonomous driving, OS has a leading position. In 2017, OS has commissioned the world’s most modern 6-inch LED chip production site in Kulim, Malaysia, to drive future growth. OSRAM has secured the division's leading technological position through targeted reinforcement in the VCSEL area for facial recognition applications and through quantum dots for innovative nanostructures.

Automotive (AM)

The Automotive (AM) business unit develops, produces and sells lamps, light modules and sensor components for automotive applications in both OEM and aftermarket segments. This includes conventional and LED-based solutions. In addition, the financial figures of the OSRAM Continental joint venture are included in AM's business figures. By combining lighting and electronics expertise, the joint venture develops and markets intelligent lighting solutions for automotive applications, such as intelligent matrix light for headlamps.

In 2016, OSRAM further expanded its leading position in automotive lighting with the acquisition of Novità Technologies, a US-based manufacturer of LED modules for taillights and fog lights as well as daytime running lights. With its investments in the LiDAR experts LeddarTech, Blickfeld and Tetravue, OSRAM also has strengthened its position in the field of autonomous driving.

Unique design, innovation and excellence

Digital (DI)

The Digital (DI) business unit bundles OSRAM's businesses that benefit most from the ongoing digitalization process. These range from electronic components and lighting systems to hardware and software for lighting management. The Boston-based subsidiary Digital Lumens, which OSRAM acquired in 2017, addresses industrial customers with energy-efficient lighting as well as sensor- and software-based value-added services such as asset tracking.

DI also includes entertainment applications covering stage, studio, and film set lighting. Special mention should be made of the Italian subsidiary Clay Paky, which for years has been providing lighting effects on the show stage of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), as well as the French stage lighting company ADB. In 2017, OSRAM also acquired LED Engin, based in Silicon Valley, a supplier of bright and compact LED lighting solutions. Traxon as a specialist for effective facade illumination is also part of the DI business unit.

As the leading company in lighting for indoor plant cultivation, OSRAM acquired in 2018 the Texas-based Fluence Bioengineering for the fast-growing horticulture sector, and also acquired stakes in the start-ups Agrilution and motörleaf. By illuminating different wavelengths, for example with so-called "light recipes," growers can influence and optimize crop yields, nutrients and flavor.

Lamps for cinema projection and lighting solutions for medical and industrial applications are also part of DI. This includes high-intensity UV lamps used to disinfect surfaces, gases or liquids and textile illumination.
